Chapter Nine

Manning was sitting in his SUV when Jerry arrived at the station at the end of their shift. Seeing Jerry, he climbed out and hurried to greet him. “Is he still gone?”

“Close your eyes.”

Manning did as told.

“Do you feel him?”

Manning’s brow furrowed then relaxed as he opened his eyes. “No, I think I did it. I helped him find his peace. I think helping him helped me. I’ve felt so calm today.”

“Good deal.” Jerry cast a glance at Gunter, who was standing at his side wagging his tail. At least someone is getting some peace.

“Maybe that’s my new calling. Helping people cross over.”

Oh, boy. “I don’t think it works like that. I think it worked this time because you had a personal connection to the spirit.”

“But it couldn’t hurt to try, right? I mean, I don’t see them like you do, but if I feel one near, maybe I should tell him it’s okay to cross over. That would be alright, don’t you think?”

“Sure, Manning.”

“Cool. Oh, and I talked to the guys. They were skeptical at first, but then I showed them the tape, and they all saw it too. They think it’s pretty cool that Gunter was still on the job. Too bad he had to cross over; we’d make national news. Boy, what a great dog he was.” Gunter jumped up on Manning, licking the side of his cheek, and Jerry felt a tinge of jealousy. Manning looked to the sky and brushed away the moisture. “Hey, we’d better get inside; I think it’s starting to rain. Glad it held off until the end of our shift.”

They walked into the building together, and everyone greeted them with casual indifference. Jerry tossed his hat onto his chair, changed out of his uniform, and headed to Seltzer’s office.

“Is he with you?” Sergeant Seltzer asked the moment Jerry entered.

“Joined at the hip.”

Seltzer’s eyes twinkled. “That must be amazing.”

“More like a pain in the ass. I don’t know what’s worse, him or the cat.” At least the cat seems to like me.

Seltzer raised an eyebrow. “I never pictured you as a cat guy.”

“I’m full of surprises.”

“To say the least. Any trouble with the guys?”

“No, apparently, seeing ghosts trumps crazy.”

Seltzer chuckled. “Seeing ghosts trumps everything.”

“You might want to keep an eye on Manning.”

“Is there a problem?”

“I think helping the dog cross was akin to a religious experience. He thinks he has a gift.”

“Well, crap.”

“Yep.”

“You got any preference for patrols tomorrow?”

“I’m going to stay local.”

“Your spidey senses tingling?”

Jerry rolled his neck. “Something’s brewing.”

“Big?”

“I picked up something today. Might be something minor, but whatever it is will need a delicate touch.”

Seltzer popped a stick of gum into his mouth and leaned back in his chair. “And you think that’s you?”

“Just call me Mr. Finesse.”

Seltzer frowned. “Should I bring in more guys?”

“No. I don’t think that’s necessary.”

“You’re the boss,” Seltzer said, then laughed at the irony.

Jerry knew the risk his boss took each time he allowed him to take the lead on his hunches. Jerry smiled a weak smile.
